SCARES, the Sandoval County chapter of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, is a volunteer organization sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that is dedicated to providing emergency communications and related services and activities in support of Rio Rancho and other municipalities, Sandoval County, State of New Mexico, the Federal Government and the public at large as has been the custom since 1991. Amateur radio operators, often known as “Hams”, belonging to ARES have responded to local and regional disasters since the 1930s, including the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the category 5 storms Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Michael.
